I think it's not that deep, it's most likely just due to Sensei's drawing style changing...it's gotten a bit softer and cleaner, which can also be seen in Crimson Spell. But what you said is actually an interesting idea imo. It'd kinda make it more psychological. ^-^
We've already seen Aki have a mental breakdown. Enough of that. What we're seeing now is a tougher Aki, staking a claim to his place by Asami's side. The change in his appearance has nothing to do with the story but is the natural result of sensei's style evolving over the many years this manga has been running. Asami's appearance has also changed. For one thing, his head is bigger. Let's explore the psychological ramifications of that.

Well, having Asami Ryuichi totally obsessed with you is bound to swell anybody's head.
And yeah, it is her style evolving. Even YA commented on how her artwork was more detailed in the beginning.

Why not aki head getting bigger? He has the most powerful man, feared in japan and not mentioned gorgeous worshiping him ect...., that will make anybody head get bigger.That alao showed maturity in aki part, which asami constantly teases aki about his lack of maturity. Aki finally see the big picture.
We know how craze things have been for aki since he got with assmi . The contrast between his body when he first appeared and his body art form in chapter 53, he has lost enormous weight . That made me wonder where sensei going with that. The only thing I can come up with is if sensei try to make us aware of the physical toll then down the line, aki mentally broke down. Even so, aki have the neck of gettin in trouble but this kind of trouble he get into with asami is a whole new different ball game for him. So, I can see this happening. Any of you see it differently ?
