I honestly think the problem is not enough development/context. The story is too rushed. Things are just glanced over (like the student getting expelled, the father taking away his smile, the best friends unrequited love for the main character) it makes the story too hard to follow. Even while reading this I could shake the feeling of it being incomplete, like it was missing pages of chapters. In short: TOO MUCH PLOT, NOT ENOUGH DETAILS.
