I believe if Erie ended up not going to level 4 he would have chosen Erie
but since all that happened
and the reason he gave Erie the ring is cuz he did loved him but
Van took the oportunity and made norman fall in love with him now that Erie was out of the way
Erie not getting what he wanted would have been a good ending. So this was a bad cliched ending. Rapist gets what he wants AS usual.
Why the hate? It was a good read. So he choose Van but Erie also got what he wanted - the ring was off of Norman's finger. It was a good ending.
