Have yet to see a bad side. Good things, notification of updates. photo albums, name/friend recognition, bookmarks, history of read items, notification of questions answered ... if you are worried, get a new hotmail/outlook address and sign up with that ...
GIRL and tokidoki pretty much said everything, so I'll just add that if you're hesitating for "safety reasons" you should just create an email address with a fake name, age and so on that you'd use only for forums and websites (that way you have less spams... Tho 90% of my spams come because of the university) And then you just have to go check it once every 1-2 months ^^
And if you don't want to use it then you can just log out or delete it ^^
I highly recommend it, having an account here is extremely comfortable: just keeping track of what you read for me is great, but you can also tag everything, write public reviews and private ones (I usually write down trivial stuff that helps me remember the story ╮(￣▽￣)╭). You can also create lists and bundle up mangas with similar themes or your favourites. There are also many social features, like writing public and private messages, following other users (but you don't get notifications on their activity).
If you don't feel safe about subscribing with your email, just open the browser and create a Google or a Microsoft account, it's free! And you will feel more secure. But I haven't received any weird mail, just usual spam, and I don't think it was caused by subscribing.

I'd recommend it if you really like reading mangas, it keeps track for you. Like I used to write the mangas I love/finished reading on scratch papers which I would end up loosing ╮(￣▽￣)╭ I don't have to anymore. And I'll suggest what the other person already said. I have 2 emails one for which I use for work (basically my normal one ) and the one I use for websites like this one. Plus most of the people here are nice (ignore the trolls)

XD me too until said usb stopped working Σ(っ°Д °;)っ worst 8 hours in my life (jk) I had to take it apart then fix it back for it to work again... And first thing I did then was transfer it on my computer and make a GDrive backup file XD
