it's different for everybody, but generally yes it can be painful. I recommend lubing up and fingering to ease into it but regardless it will still probably be painful or uncomfortable, but over time that goes away and becomes more pleasurable.
Most of the people I know told me that they didn't experience any pain, just that the first time they had sex was rather mediocre and awkward.
