if he makes a joke then looks at you to say your reaction, if he spreads himself out on a chair to look "bigger", if he smiles a lot more around you, if he tries to make excuses or something to touch you or your hair or your body, he may try to catch your eye

I would straight up ask him (I've done it before) but maybe it's not best to force it out of him. Your choice
Wouldnt it be akward? Like afterwards when its all just imagination?
For me it wasn't, we were able to act like normal friends after I asked (I was trying to force it out of him and he said he didn't like me even though he told my friends he did, in fact, like me......so a fake answer to save himself)
Maybe right when I asked him there was awkward pauses and answers, but I mean at least you know.
