Not Manga - but related

So, while I wait for my faves to update, I checked out some fan fics. And soooo many had 'reader inserts' where the author pairs the reader with a character in the story. My question is for those who read fan fics ... does ANYone actually like reading stories like that?

I tried several different 'insert' stories and was totally weirded out, then my thought was, why does this author assume
1) that I am the gender they intend the pairing for
2) that I would think of said character that way and
3) that I would ever think the weird things they make the 'reader insert' think ...

Anyone feel this? Am I just a little nuts for feeling this ... and if so. am I walnuts, pecans or hazelnuts?

I guess if they're making it then there's gotta be a target group but it's not my thing as well. Honestly gives me a weird feeling. No shaming for those who like it though.

Honestly, I just pretend the Y/N insert they stick in there is just an unique name, Whyen, since I've never actually been able to connect with those reader inserts enough to pretend it's me. Perhaps many of those types of authors write thinking of themselves in the story rather than trying to create a target group to appeal to?

Probably. But if the idea appeals to them such that they'd make the story where they can be in it, then I guess they've become said target group themselves.
