Basically you got the story right. It was a bittersweet progress they are having but the weren't insecure but instead, they didn't realise there is love between them.
I love this twisting love between them. Used and being used. Misato used Mei to get revenge toolder Sato for stealing Akira (his first man) away from him because Misato noticed that the one that older Sato truly love is Mei, and using that he tricked Mei into his sick love trap. On the other hand, Mei accepted Misato's love even he knows that that was only for payback for stealing his (i meant Misato) lover (Akira). But Mei still continues to love Misato in order to forget about his love for older Sato that he never revealed but somehow Misato noticed (in another manga Kyou anata ni Wakare wo Tsugemasu) and flee out of jealousy because he noticed that somehow he actually really fell deeply in love with Mei. But Mei ran after him and confessed his love was only for the one and only Misato...the new sato. But unfortunately, both of them still felt unsecured with their new profound love because of both of their confession of used and being used. I have to re dead these two mangas to actually understand. This is from my point of view, but if im wrong...please please please...EXPLAIN to me!! Fufufu
