I think they are one now

Well they are one, however we can also say that they've temporarily merged to become a new third person. Val isn't naughty or uninhibitedly rough by nature (that part comes from the demon whereas the reasoning and talking faculties, and the sense of pride come from Val).
The beast could only feel bestial pleasure before whereas now he can translate his sexual drive, into words. There is no doubt however that Val is the one in control because even if the beast gained the ability to think, if he were in control, he would transform Val into someone completely out of control. In the end, regardless of how we may choose to look at it, both desire Hal, so the part where Val describes Hal as being his "beautiful wizard" may be understood as being representative of both of them.
At this point I am reluctant though to say that they are mutually conscious of each other (will Val remember all of this after the beast returns to its dormant state?). This is important in my point of view because it will help predict how the plot is going to evolve from now on.

I think they are slowly over time evolving into one person. Like they've made peace with each other's existence because they share a body and a love, but the more they need each other to survive the more they wall between their consciousnesses is coming down and they're blending into one soul or personality. <--- just my feeling anyway
