Shinobu is the child of Karen and Makio's Father. Which is why he was given the task to go to the mermaid/lion guy instead of his father.
Sorry messed up the names. I mixed up Makio and her child manami up. Makio is the mother of Kunimasa & Yonekuni while she is the father of manami and shinobu since karen was the one who gave birth to manami and shinobu. There is a family chart in one of the chapters. I have to look for it.
