    It softens the ropes so they don't hurt your skin. If you've ever felt rope before, you'll know when I'm talking about.

    Although it is not necessary. I have a set that I didn't boil. Strictly for punishment purposes. Heh heh heh. Though it does get washed in the machine (sans fabric softener)
