Emba and yuuen are what native Americans call "spirit people " ..

Two individuals that knew ..loved and were together in a past life ..and will continue to be together
In whatever body their in ..man/man woman/woman woman/man

We didn't care who was with who in the good old days ...all we cared about was if the couples LOVED each other CARED enough for each other to take responsibility for each other

But that went to hell when the catholics came over to try to convert the (500)nations to Christianity

This could ALMOST be a true story ..ALMOST ..since there isn't a written history for the anasazi ..the mothers and fathers of the modern tribes
There were pictographs in chaco canyon ..where they lived ..but no one has been really able to translate then ..unfortunately

I think that's why I LIKE THIS MANGA ...it's a what if ..and gets people thinking hopefully

Except that in the end, Emba and Yuuen still could not be open about their relationship to the rest of the tribe (note: spoilers ahead). They knew and the fathers knew, but no one else knew that they were together. That is why the brother was confused when his son imitated their intimacy. To be with Yuuen, Emba was forced to give up being the heir to the chief, which is symbolized by him cutting his necklace off. The stark reality is that a chief was expected to marry a woman so that he could have a male child who would be the next chief. This is also a reason why the fathers thought they could never be together and had to go their own separate ways. They both married women despite being in love with each other. Luckily, Emba was brave enough to buck tradition and give up being chief so that he could be with the one he loved. Now Yuuen's brother will be chief of both tribes, and his son will be the heir.

you're not right. The tribe knew that and no one was against that. They were just polite to not be perverse in front of the child . Brother was ofcourse surprised since he ouldn't expect of them to show that in front of the kid. *o*
and ofcourse they can't be on the lead of clan because they won't have heir, it was important then that leaders can come from one bloodline and their childrens etc, for Emba and Yuuen they didn't care about such things only that they loved each others and since they had other brothers who could take that place and better than them they just threw out that thronetaking rights for ordinary loving life. also Emba wasn't dedicated that much to thronetaking and those stuff he was too passionate over something that got his emotions and attention and is more like individual 'taking care of' person to Yuuen only (cause he catched his heart) so he wouldn't be that good at leading tribe .and they had luck cause their fathers understood that and accepted cause they were in their skin. as for fathers they were just too strong, capable and responisble but proud also, in front of the tribe so they couldn;t threw all of that cause only of love. they were totally different characters than Emba and Yuuen.
