And the same reason why Ren misunderstood when he overheard Daryl making the confession to Rowan. In Japanese it was probably suki desu, or daisuki desu, which could mean I love him, her, it, you, but it was translated as "I love him" which should have made Ren think, "who's him?" Ah, non-specific pronoun confusion, a common manga dilemma.
I love how Ren shouts about Daryl being "his" AND A MAN in front of a crowd and nobody seems to notice XD
