He's only dead if you think he is. This is one of those endings where you, as the reader, get to decide the what happened. It's an open ending free to any interpretation. Souma could have survive that day, or he died under the sakura tree; it's totally up to you.

first of all, your answer is so rude, the genre tragedy doesn't mean that it has a sad ending, there's manga labeled as tragedy coz of the past or something like that. and secondly, it's an open ending , THE MANGAKA herself said that the ending depends on every reader.
there's poeple who want to enjoy good manga but can't take the pain of a sad ending, what's the bad thing here? ha?
I agree, not every genre speaks for the ending. It is what we make it out to be that determines how we will interpret it! :)
I dont know if what i said upsets you but it wasnt my intintion !!! I just asked about the ending i thought i didnt understand so why are you being rude ! I did nothing wrong... Didnt i ? I didnt even say that it wasnt a good manga ! I really like it ... It seems real and moves you with every word .... It says that beauty and wealth isnt everything in this world
