I read the blind concubine, it made me very sad and not satisfied with the ending. It just made my heart unsettled because I don't know if that was a happy ending.
this is the thing about me. Though i love twisted stories, I don't like mangas where the lover rips and takes away everything that builds made out of. Jing was one of the worst example of this case. He made me bawl my eyes at how he treated Lu Cang. He never appears to remorse them. What I still can't accept is that the strong and arrogant Lu Cang forgiving that piece of shit and still loving him.
This is just my opinion. However, I know many who LOVES Jing. There are even fanfics. Try it. You may end up liking it.
As for TBC, and MSHK I love them for how they made me feel. I just love the concubine and servant's relationship, and how it made me think that even in simplicity you can find happiness. I love the uke in MSHK, and for how funny the whole novel is filled with quirky characters. They were the softer than HHYL.
I guess I love both of them a lot of because of not how the uke and seme's relationship, but also for the people they are surrounded by. Like ShaLou said, you may not be happy with TBC. But I just love TBC, since I was moved by almost everything in this novel. Again, you may dislike TBC, and MSHK. I know people who dislike TBC and MSHK.

Yeah this one made me feel creeped out to be honest but then I tend to like happy fluffy stuff. Or black humor but if its gonna be dark at least give me some humor.
Omygad. Jing is the worst seme ever. He evil, cruel, arrogant, so dominant, very sadistic not in 'lovely yaoi way', but literally sadist, and he is unfaithful. I know he is a king, but keep having kids with concubines is disgusting while Lu Cang keep his chastity only for Jing. I hate him. I hate how Lu Cang always always forgive him. Jing humiliated Lu Cang in every possible way. I mean, how can Lu cang still alive when Jing treated him very cruel. Throw him away, made him replacement, torture and sentence him to death. It just sad that Lu Cang loves him. In manga it not described, but in novel Lu Cang described as never touch women even he went to brothel with the brothers. He loves Jing because Jing's appearance is exactly his dream lady.
You know, while reading I wish somehow Lu Cang will have illness on verge of death that he never wake up so Jing will frustrates so much. I even wish that Lu Cang keep impotent for sometime before cure. Jing need some remorse.
I can't read sad ending. Maybe I will pass TBC. Even HHYL literally happy ending, I m still not satisfied because I want some justice for Lu Cang =="
I started to read Hako no Naka & MSHK. Is MSHK sad ending?
I did get upset over Jing's faithfulness. But since he was the EMPEROR, (Emperor are supposed to have multiple concubines, and it was his duty to produce heirs in the old Chinese culture) I forgot about it. I found his reason to it ridiculous and hilarious though. He's sleeping around so Lu Cang won't be tortured like Dong Xian. If he likes sleeping around, he should find a better reason to, or should not even bother asking Lu Cang why he isn’t upset about it.
However, even if he’s promiscuous, I wish he treats the people around him better. I hate how he kills those upset him for idiotic reasons like scratching him accidently. I despise how people have to walk on eggshells around him in fear of being executed. What I hate the most is that, people worshipping him when he’s a psycho. I know I’m blabbering. I still can’t get over Jing's personality though it’s been a year since I read HHYL. (︶︿︶)＝凸
I wish Lu Cang found someone else, or at least left Jing. Perhaps that’s why I love TBC. Someone commented that, unlike other ukes, the uke in HHYL doesn’t give in to seme and remains strong. I was getting tired of fall in love after being raped thing in some yaoi mangas. So I decided to read with excitement since I heard many praising comments about it. Boy, I was so disappointed.
Anyway, both Haka no Naka and MSHK has happy endings. Read MSHK, I think you may fall in love with the uke's character, and his family members like I did. I love how the lovers' relationship in Hako no Naka started slow innocently, and progressed to an unconditional love. ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ﾉ~
Anyway, I recommend trying Mirage of Blaze by Mizuna Kuwabara. I haven't read it, but I will soon. I heard the plot is superb. There's even an anime and manga adaption of it.
I think the uke in HHYL is not a strong uke, he did give in to seme, not because the sex pleasure but because his love. But it can be said that, in my interpretation, Lu Cang indeed an innocent uke in love matter. He never touched women and his dream lady is having same face as Jing. Yes Lu Cang refused to had sex a lot of times. How many times Lu Cang said in his heart that he wanted to puke when they had sex, that's because he didn't enjoy it, I think he wanted Jing to love him, and Lu Cang always cried every times they did it in their early relationship. I mean, actually Lu Cang fell in love with Jing at the first sight. That's why the story is saddening, because however Lu Cang was treated badly, what hurt the most is his heart. He's been humiliated in every possible way. Jing raped him almost everywhere and what hurt is Jing didn't care to do it in front of other people that shattered all men prides. You know it's like, you love people who treated you bad, used you, buy still loving him. Lu Cang keep asking how long until he get thrown away by Jing if Jing get tired of him someday, but he insisted to be with Jing as long as he could. He is so stupidly loyal and how should I put it, his love to Jing can be said as unconditional.
Same as you, I wish Lu Cang found someone else. I really really want Jing get some slap of karma in his face. I even wish that Lu Cang keep impotent so Jing can show some remorse for what he did.
What I like in this story is, the author really did great job describing gay rape is not flowery sweet & hot. It sad & heartbreaking. And the author success to made a very strong sadistic seme that readers can't forgive whatever the reasons behind his sadistic act. It's not rape = love. And along the novel Jing never said that he loves Lu Cang, he only said he cares a lot about him.
I read some histories about gay culture in ancient Chinese & Japanese. In ancient China, Emperor did have 'male companion'. Just like Lu Cang, emperor gave them nobility and rank. The famous one is Emperor Ai, which in relationship with his married General if I m not mistaken, and the emperor refused to get married and had no heir. When Emperor Ai died without heir. The Grand Empress (emperor's mother) decided to execute his partner. But the general who is actually has a wife, committed suicide along with his wife. In Japan there are story about male companion as well but I never read story about emperor male companion. But some stories the rank below royal, like samurai, noble they did had story about male companion.

wow, I never thought about it like that. Maybe, like you said the authour really did a good job in making me feel gay rape is not a flowery and sweet thing. Xing Bao Er must really love cruel semes. this is the case in her novel Jus Primae Noctis and Fallen Hero.
Also, now that you said it Lu Cang really do love Jing more than how Jing cares about Lu Cang. It's sad that he loves such a cruel person who still insist on keeping him in a cage.
