For me, it was at the second time because the first time I read Viewfinder some years ago, I dropped it after reading the first chapters. At that time, I had been disgusted by the rape scenes (Asami then Feilong, then Asami again) and I hated this story.

I gave it another try last year and read more chapters than the first time. I got hooked approximately at chapter 12 or 13.

I didn't like Asami at first but I changed my mind about the moment Akihito is kidnapped by Feilong, from this moment:

I wasn't totally hooked here but it was that scene which showed me that Asami had deep feelings for Akihito, because Aki told him he beatryed him and Asami didn't punish him, he kissed him instead. I thought: "Wow, Asami must really be in love with Akihito to let him go just with a violent kiss! He would have killed any guy who would have betrayed him except Akihito!"

Then, this scene had also an impact on my point of view:

And finally, I was addicted after this scene: http://www.mangago.me/read-manga/you_re_my_loveprize_in_viewfinder/mh/v05/c029/20/
    and: http://www.mangago.me/read-manga/you_re_my_loveprize_in_viewfinder/mh/v05/c030/13/

    And you?

VF was my first BL manga that I read started of last year. But, I read the vf wiki first which gave me a glimpse of what going on with the manga and the same time , I told myself if I 'm going to pursuit it, I have to keep in mind that this Manga is nothing but fiction. Because of that , it help me through the rape issue. Part from that, it had me at hello at "Tabaka's Wonderful Day", chapter 1.1.

For me it was the first chapter, but I did know about vf before I actually read the manga. I used to think of it as something bad....boy was I wrong xD

Asami rescues Takaba from Feilong drew me in to the story. I saw parts of it on a now defunct site, started reading it . It was the parts shown by Alohomori that really held my interest.

Wow, You started reading BL mangas with a hard one. Viewfinder is appreciated by a lot of readers but this story is hated by many others too. I think that beginning with Viewfinder when you're discovering the BL can be a revelation as well as a complete turn off. It depends on the people and the kind of story they like or hate.

I don't remember which one was my first BL story because it was twelve years ago and I enjoyed reading BL so much that I eagerly read every stories that I could on different websites. But I remember that those stories were not very hard. It was more fluffy, with a cute romance. As a beginner, I had been lucky because I'm picky with the story I read.

I throughly understand what u saying about how hard it will be for some new comers first time will result of a turn off. For me, I had an open mind that underneath all this turbulence, this manga have more to offer. Was I wrong or right? And, I am glad, I didn't give up. Personally, the kind of job I do day after day, I see more horrifying things that u can't even imagine.

I was hooked early on. I was just starting to accept the idea that rape scenes could play a role in fiction beyond supporting myths found in rape culture, and I was looking at yoai as an example of how rape as seduction may give characters and readers permission to explore sexuality society condemns, such as same-sex relationships and BDSM. Even in the early chapters, I saw something that worked for me--maybe because I was looking for it. Of course, I didn't have to wait long between one chapter and the next, and the story progressed into a lot more than the original premise.

I don't know what your job is but you indeed must have a strong mind to do it if you see "more horrifying things". Then, I understand why you didn't give up. Personally, I'm glad I gave up the first time because I return reading this story years after my first reading so I had more chapters to read the second time.^^ It's so hard to wait sometimes that I prefer not being hooked by a story when it just started.

But I'm glad I gave it another try because it worths the reading. And now, even if I don't like the beginning of a manga, I give a little more time to a story because I think that maybe after a few chapters, it will suit my tastes better.

I was hooked the 2nd time I read it. I read VF when I was a newbie in yaoi and didn't like the rape in the 1st chapters but later on I tried reading it and got hooked instantly. Since then I read VF countless times.

I don't like the rape aspect in this either. Took me a while and re-reads of several chapters to somewhat get over it (though not entirely) ... but there's so much good stuff about this manga as well. Personally, I got hooked with Flower on the High Loft. At that point I realized this was not just mindless and sometimes rapey smut. Although it was mostly characters that got me entirely into it and made me decide I'd give it a chance despite the aspects I disliked.

On the rape thing, there's a type of rape in yaoi that is used as a metaphor for sexual awakening, like it is here. It speaks particularly to women who are conditioned to believe that to desire sex and enjoy sex makes them a slut, so in the metaphor, the initial sex act is depicted as rape because the woman is conditioned to believe sex to be negative. So when the uke "enjoys" the rape, that is the woman coming to her own understanding that sex feels good, she likes it.

If you read it that way, this is actually pretty feminist stuff.
