it's implied that every male character involved in the main story will inevitably turn obsessive towards their partners, including the king. He knew that his choice would ultimately lead to the queen's hatred, but as long as he could keep her, it would be enough. Anakin is a noname character so he isn't counted. It's hard coded into the story's law, same way as committing suicide without following the story's flow won't result in death. This world operates in a different logic.
sorry in advance if this is wrong but from memory, the reason the king killed his first son aka the original crown prince is because eris’s dad was making a case against the royal family. eris’s dad was aiming to kill the empress by making her the culprit, but the king made a deal with him instead to pin it all on the son (knowing he was innocent) just to keep the queen alive. the queen became aware of all this sometime during the trial after seeing the king’s reaction and lack of support for their son. the king chose the life of his wife over their son, and made peace with it because even if she despised him she’d still be alive and with him
i don’t remember why the eris’s dad did it, but im pretty sure this info is given during eris’s and the queens secret meeting too
