Well, in the novel, Riftan doesn't find out immediately. He thinks he ruined her life because he couldn't protect her (because she got a miscarriage) so he sends her back to her father's house, who ends up abusing her more. Her father tells her it's her fault that Riftan left her and she finds out she had a miscarriage and thinks Riftan hates her bc of it. And then after way too long, Riftan visits her father's house but her father won't let him see her. And things happen and he finds out that she's being abused by him, and he's why she's so timid. So then Riftan assaults the father, and gets in trouble w/ the authorities because technically, her father is above Riftan in rank.

And it gets plot-heavy here. Since Maxi is a woman, she doesn't have rights and is basically property, so Riftan might lose his rank. So Maxi decides to join the Academy of Mages, because as a mage, she gets rights and can protect Riftan from losing everything. And then basically, the Academy is really sheltered and doesn't ever let mages leave so Riftan and Maxi can't ever see each other. It just gets really angsty because they don't know how each other feels about each other but they keep writing to each other but the letters never send.

Nope, no idea. Since she's not with the knights and Riftan physically (since she isn't allowed to leave the academy), there's not a lot of details about that. It seems like the story is focusing more on her personal growth than her relationship in this arc.
