Well, at least none can say it's cliché. Disturbing but I liked it. All these chapters sure throw usual tropes away~
You, dear manga, are going straight in my bookcase.

[SPOILER but not really a SPOILER to anyone who's read Oko-Sama Box]

To all the readers who are bothered by all the comments that they end breaking up, if you've read Oko-sama Box which is set a bit further in the future (it's the continuation of the 2nd volume of Oko-sama Star), you've seen they're back together =) You can think of Oko-sama Star as the 3rd volume of the series even if it doesn't focus on Honda/Kaidou. So noooo worries ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ノ~

Tbh, I almost enjoyed this story as much as it annoyed me ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ It could have been a perfect gem if only there wasn't so much sexist statements. I mean, come on, just because you're a female you have to accept the fact that you're weak, you have to be delicate and change your manners from when you used to be a guy? Naaah, sorry, but having a male or a female's body doesn't mean to have to force yourself to fit in a category you're not deeply at ease with. It would have been even greater if Nao didn't change their way of living nor their mindset (I prefer using the neutral pronoun). When Nao went again through emergence, I honestly didn't care if it was gonna be a guy or a girl coming out. Well, they were in love with each other so Neo physical body didn't matter to me but seemed to be a big one to feed the plotline and its binary vision. And I think that the page that annoyed me the most is the last one of chap 19. "There is a reason for a man and a woman and that's why I'm a woman." I really got the feeling that love and wanting a child were put on the same line, implying that only a straight couple could find both love and having a child. And I'm soooo against that narrow-minded mindset. Wanting a child isn't only and simply bound to a biological factor, everyone one, regarding their sex, gender or whatever, can have the desire to have a child. Anyway, I may have irked some people here and I know it's a fictional story, but still. Oh and I can see coming some reactions saying "this must be some gay person" and so on. Um, no, I'm asexual as rock ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ノ~

    lenalena April 6, 2017 1:58 pm

    I agree with you completely.

And by the way, I'm asexual and gay! XD (well, panromantic)

    Onapenny April 6, 2017 2:11 pm

I had so many awkward feelings when I read the first or second chapter where Nao kicked Kyousuke. And it continued until I finished reading the series. Honestly, I don't know why I read this, probably because I liked the struggle between being friends to lovers but DAMN so many sexist statements there is a need to force myself swallow them. I also liked the art and smexy times.

Well, it's a Japanese story. I don't know whether it's common knowledge or not, but basically Japan and a number of other Asian countries are at the very bottom of gender equality.
Women are urged quit their jobs to become the perfect house wive after getting married. They are supposed to be delicate, beautiful and youthful. But it's not just women who have to deal with stupid stereotypes... Men are supposed to be hardworking, strong and intelligent.
There are some efforts to promote gender equality in Japan but it will probably take a generation or two until the mindset of the majority of people has changed.

I do. I guess that's why I still read such mangas, either shoujo or yaoi, because I accept that this is how it is in Japan and I can't do anything about it. Though they press my buttons.

I've been in Japan for some time and sadly, you're completely right. Be it men or women, each of them have to fit in their category, letting no option to be who they really want to be (I've discussed with straight Okama and gays). It's even more sad when Japanese background History had (male) homosexuality in its religious & military fields and it wasn't considered as deviant or abnormal until Western countries started dealing with Japan and influenced them with their mindset. And the vision of fragile, weak, docile women who are bound to hold the house is really tiring >.> fortunately, I've been meeting more and more Japanese women (young <25y) who want to change that and aren't willing to do as tradition instructs. More generally, Japanese people who want to escape their society's rules and narrow-minded binary mindset try to study abroad when they can (I've met several Japanese in France who all told me they couldn't stand their society expectations and they were truly feeling oppressed. And paradoxically, it's easier for a foreigner to live there than for a Japanese even if the Japanese society tend to look down on them x)). Anyway, like you said, it's a japanese author who did this work, it was an interesting plot at the beginning but ended up being too narrow-minded at the end imo and I don't think the author themselves has this vision since the Editing House's will is almighty and they have the power to urge mangaka to redraw/delete some scenes they don't find good enough or basically wrong. *sigh* Thanks for replying to my comment! I thought I was gonna draw all the irked people who loved this story XD

    Shadowyn777 April 6, 2017 10:50 pm

Oh and I just wanted to add one last thing: even of it's fictional, it might have an unconscious impact on readers (not all of them ofc). And I truly believe that making stories that blow up clichés and stereotypes are the first step to get to a more open-minded state and get away of shoujo/yaoi tropes =) slowly establishing new sets that will throw clichés in the dustbin XD (lately I'm totally into "Why Did Men Stop Wearing High Heels?" which is a good example of all what I'm defending. I looove this story that isn't even a yaoi or shounen-ai, has an awesome plot and MC XD)

Everyone on this thread should go watch rachel and jun's video on youtube. Japanese women are basically having a twitter/online #metoo kind of movement by discussing the sexist encounters they've experienced during their lives, personal and business. The tweets are incredibly sad because Japanese women work so incredibly hard and deserve to be treated with respect like everyone else but Japan is still incredibly sexist even in this modern age and it needs to change. No country is currently treating its women as they deserve but my country compared to Japan is so much better. I mean, pretty much EVERY Japanese woman has been sexually assaulted. Sexual assault is extremely common there, but unreported because they are told it isn't assault and that what happens to them is their fault. Almost every Japanese girl has a story about being touched inappropriately on a train and that is just sad and disgusting. All women deserve better, Japanese women deserve better!!

    Okarisu January 4, 2019 6:22 pm

I always hate the things where someone finds out their intersex and feels like they have to now identify as a different gender.

I loved the anime (and the light novels) and now the manga, thank you dear scanlators for picking this series! <3
