You could say there is a continuing theme running through the books, something vague like 'the progression of Kakashi and Iruka's relationship,' but that could have been accomplished without making it a 'series' by linking the books through their titles. Books can be read in order or you can skip around amongst them with no fear of missing an important plot-point that went before or having a book end with a big cliffhanger. These are essentially stand-alone books. (On the other hand, why *not* read them in the order they were published?
