I hate swimming.

I hate swimming, although watching Free! did make swimming look great. I just hate the water, I can swim (not perfectly) and I can get near it but I have bad experiences with pools of water. When I was younger my dad used to throw me in the deep end to "teach" me how to swim. I remember I'd splash around panicky and tired until I couldn't hold my weight above water and my dad would only come in and get me until I was submerged below. Whenever there was a pool or a lake, I remember hiding and crying before my dad even stepped toward me. Even now I'm wary when it comes to public pools or lakes. Of cocourse, my dad doesn't do it anymore I still get those bad memories of my nose filling up with water, my throat coughing up for air and my arms and legs feeling heavy. Its really terrible not to mention embarrassing.

I don't think you should be embarrassed, per se. But it is understandable to feel that way, since this must have been traumatic, especially from someone you must have trusted your whole life.

I remember having near-drowning experiences before as a kid, but actually I was happy to later in highschool learn how to "tread" water. It taught me that it's possible to stay afloat even in the deep end, so I was no longer afraid to swim there. Before that, I was only able to go in the 3 ft deep water.

Have you tried having swimming lessons? The instructors will never force you or physically push you into the water, so there isn't that to fear, but it's understandable if you just wanna stay away from swimming completely.

I think there's nothing wrong with that since you do not need to swim to survive in this day and age unless you were going on a boat or something, then it might be useful.

Thanks, and I have took swimming lessons before but I always half-assed it so but I can stay a float and swim but when I swim past 4ft I'm already panicking and thinking of the worst scenarios and I lose focus and chicken out almost immediately. But as I get older I know it's just in my head and whatever. But still thanks for the words of encouragement!
