At my earlier stage of entering the anime/manga world, I didn't know I could buy manga easily. I thought I would have to buy it online (I didn't have a credit card, I was too young) and it would be in Japanese (this was before I discovered translated versions online).
However, a relative managed to buy one from a bookstore. It was volume 1 of Fairy Tail, though I never read any further or watched much of the anime. It was then that I discovered that I could buy volumes locally but they were limited to extremely popular mangas and were quite expensive for someone who was too young to have a paying job.
Plus, around the same time, I discovered websites like this one that had a giant range of different mangas, webcomics and manwhas for free.
However, once I have a stable enough income and have found a store that sells what I want, I do plan to support the manga industry, at least a bit.
