I have a question concerning ukes in mangas.
I have been lurking this site for quite some time and i have seen people being bothered by a few things when it comes to yaoi mangas. Here's what it really bothers me:
Why is it that in the majority of mangas is it somehow a norm and ok to show the uke having sex with other people but not the seme?
I have read lots of mangas and i have encountered this i don't know how many times and it really pisses me off. When it comes to sex the manga artists don't really have a problem with depicting the uke being sexually active, having sex or enjoying sex with other people , but when it comes to the seme we are always told that he was a playboy or had sexual experience but very few artists actually show the seme having sex with other people beside the uke.
I wonder why is that? Does anyone know because i have dropped so many mangas because of this stupid attitude. Either show both of them having sex with other people or no one at all. This double standard is making me crazy.
I don't mind if the seme or the uke had previous experience or relationships but when i am introduced to them in the manga it ruins my mood so much when i have to see one of them, predominately , having and enjoying sex with other people. How am i supposed to believe that then they have feelings for the partner? For me it cheapens the relationship so much and i can't root for the couple any more.
Does anyone knows why the manga artist do that? I'm really curious about it...
For my own opinion, just my own.... I think this "uke is okay to be slutty" and "seme is playboy when he had sex with too many guys/girls", is because of GENDER ASSUMPTIONS (if this is the right term) being put into the seme and uke....
In yaoi manga, seme is mainly the one who is the man/has the boyish characteristics and so if you define a man, ...... 2 reply
I don't like it too. Since I'm top (IRL) I usually empathize with the seme and the double standards angers me. I sometimes wanted to scream unfair to the posters who even glorify the uke and treats like he's some kind of badass and crucify the seme when he is the one do did the same thing. Like, WTF. 1 reply
The seme is nearly always depicted with this kind of 'perfect boyfriend' image; he only has eyes for his beloved uke, he can't do it with anyone else because he's so madly in love with the uke, whether the uke is unfaithful or not (makes him more attractive in the readers' eyes)
Yaoi/shounen ai manga is directed at a female audience. Usually the uk...... reply
Seeing the ukee having sex with other persons, for me, is far beeing bothersome than seeing the seme with other guys, that is mostly because he somehow act like a bitch...? But as i said that is my own opinion, beeing always in the receiving part has some kind of effect in the reader's mind, so unconsiously you're gonna associate him with the femi...... 2 reply
Personally, I don't like it when either the uke or seme are with other people during the story (prior relationships are fine), but the world is full of all types, and I think every type gets a bit of fan service. As the previous answer stated, often female readers identify with the uke, so the fantasy may be that many partners want the uke, and the...... 1 reply
If you think about it, most yaoi is told from the uke's point of view. So naturally, you see that more. Sometimes it's from both POVs, but I don't remember a story told from only the seme's POV (off the top of my head. I'm sure they exist though)...
I agree though, I hate when they cheat. Whether they are the seme or the uke. Though if it's that th...... reply
I have a theory about that. It all has to do with perspective. Primarily, most manga is told from the point of view of the uke. Their emotions, the things they do, even how they see things; those things filter what the reader experiences in context of the story.
So using that idea of perspective, I think it make more sense seeing the uke having...... reply
I think it's the threat perspective actually. A uke often takes a more female personality, with a more empathetic connection with everyone around them. So the lover to friend transferrance can come through without placing doubt on the genuine feelings of the character. But with a seme it's a little more difficult. Often how they relate to the worl...... 1 reply
Sometimes I think the mangakas are trying to lean towards a certain audience and it just so happens that a lot of their readers seem to like that kind of plot...? I'm not entirely sure myself reply
Because is like in the real life, some men would like to see their girlfriend with another girl, but not with another man. Some times that is reflexed in yaois too, the uke take the rol of the girl, because that, is ok if they are making sex with another uke. Something like this I guess xD reply
