This may have been the first manga I ever completed so it certainly has a special place in my heart. And, boy, what a manga to call my first! Although it seemed to start out so simple and light hearted, this manga really showed itself to be unexpectedly complex.
The author did a great job of slowly revealing the dark emotions in all of the characters in a realistic way, like slowly peeling away layers of an onion until you're left with nothing but the raw insides. In fact, this author's greatest talent might be the verisimilitude of her characters; it's like you're watching real live people interact. But I digress. I just wanted to say that this manga will make you laugh, and cry, and reevaluate the way you look at yourself and the people around you. I think it's a great manga to read when entering or leaving adolescence as it serves as a reminder that people are difficult and confusing and cruel, but are rarely evil.
tbh i read this and watched the anime maybe like, 8 years ago?? not sure, but i was a loser who lOVed shoujo manga. which is basically me today lmao. i've forgotten most of it except for the beginning, so it was wonderful reading it again. i read it all in one go lol, and i think im feeling a little sick ahEM. anyways, i highly rec reading this! it was absolutely beautiful :)
first half is from her perspective and its great. proper shoujo hs romance shenanigans. the second half is from his and is a melodramatic MESS. also that ending with their daughter having a thing for their adult best friend? YIKES
I remember watching the anime when I was little and liking it, but since it had no ending I thought I could just take a peek at this. What a mistake. Yucky. Bleh. Many red flags but that grooming presented like destiny and romantic, just wow. Yuck x2.
Good writing but the p*do parts getting romanticise is just baffling. They manage to did it TWICE(1. One of the FL friend dating a guy who's 28 while she's still in high school. 2. FL adult friend's catching feelings for Fl's daughter that's a high school student). On a positive note, I like the character personality and how real it feels. The romance development was right and didn't feel too fast. The humour never fails to make me laugh. Overall, I enjoyed it but was disappointed at the same time on the direction they went to. When I read those parts, I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable.
Yukino Miyazawa is a Japanese high school freshman who is the envy of classmates for her good grades and immaculate appearance. However, her "perfect" exterior is a fa?§ade, a charade she maintains to win praise. In the privacy of her own home, she is spoiled, stubborn, and a slob, and studies relentlessly and obsessively to maintain her grades. On entering high school, she is knocked from her position at the top of the class by Soichiro Arima, a handsome young man whose very existence Yukino considers a threat to the praise on which she thrives, and she vows to destroy him. When Soichiro confesses that he has a crush on her, Yukino rejects him then boasts about it at home. Eventually Yukino realizes she loves him as well, and together they resolve to abandon their fake ways and be true to themselves, though she initially has trouble breaking of her lifelong habit of pretend-perfection and her competitive ways
