To me the best part was the last couple of pages. Shirow explains some of his Sci-Fi, but also goes deeper into the philosophy and religious concepts that bring Ghost in the Shell to life. Of course, the plot of this first of the Ghost in The Shell installment is engaging -- but I'm more interested in the deeper message.

And most of the time, I need that message explicitly stated to me. There are times when Aramaki and Kusanagi make their statements about hedonism, the purpose of life, the folly of materialism...and they are at good points, too. I just feel like those philosophical topics are somewhat disconnected from the cyber terrorism focused plot.

Great manga nonetheless, would recommend, if only for those last few pages (and of course, you won't really get them if you don't read the whole thing!).

I watched the anime movie a few months ago, so that's how I found out about the manga, by the way. It's amazing how many movies come from written media :)
