A young Chinese boy, Lee-Ren is purchased from his poverty stricken mother by a Japanese official for sexual purposes in 1910. Thus begins the 'owned' life of Lee-Ren in his master's household, where he is alternately sold out and used within. Jin, the naive young son of the master, grows up with Lee-Ren. This is the story of their tumultuous relationship.
Would've preferred another few chapters to explain why Lee-Ren refused him so adamantly, and Jin to go back to being gentle, but I can only guess why and assume Jin became this way because he sold his soul to a life he never wanted.
Those two truly love each other. However, guilt toward each other is going to be their downfall. The ukes love for the seme has him acting cold and indifferent. He feels that he has ruined a bright and upstanding man, so by being unresponsive, perhaps the seme might leave him. The semes love for the uke has him acting possessive, cold, and cruel. He misunderstands the ukes love for hate, and this tears him inside..turning him more toxic.
I hope the kind artist student he met at the lake will rescue him and that Lee will finally be happy. I understand being poor, but I'd rather struggle than sell my child.
Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad ...... Don't know why I set myself up repeatedly for this stuff. Ah well, ... It's a beautiful manga, the art is decent. It is horribly tragic though.
The translation is awful, and I've always wanted to go back and clean it up, but I actually like the story. It's been a while, so maybe I need to re-read it, but I actually like the darkness of the ending. I think some of the explanation was lost in the translation, but I don't think it was as black and white as people are making it. Ultimately, the boy just wanted to be free, to be his own person, rather than someone kept by one man or another. The obsession of another crushes out his light, until both the boy and his captor are trapped.
