how do i even begin? following the generations of female rulers and the men entangled within the inner chambers was almost like being immersed in a fairy tale. the flow of every life lived within the palace, whether it was abrupt, long, sad or filled with happiness, it was like a peek into real people who lived. i love stories that span and interconnect by generations, how the legacy of these women and men we are intimately introduced to reappear and shine or distort throughout history. we learn about all the hurdles, the hardships and how they persevered or burned. how some even obtained happiness or died striving. the politics and the perception of gender is scrutinized, and you become emotionally invested in these snippets of life where they learn how to rule and love. this manga is simply a masterpiece.

This is a masterpiece largely underrated outside Japan. Meanwhile, this manga received accolades and awards for being ground-breaking and being one unique josei story with a well-researched historical backdrop.
