A dying empress lays a threefold curse on the ruler of the realm: evil spirits will keep him from sleeping at night, those around him will die unfortunate deaths, and he'll bleed to death from seven holes in his head before the age of thirty. Assassin He Zhijun tries to kill Emperor Baili XuanZhao, who is slowly going mad from lack of sleep, but his failed assassination attempt is forgiven upon the discovery that his presence seems to cure the emperor's perpetual insomnia. Now stuck in the palace as his Highness's personal attendant and sleep aid, He Zhijun learns that Baili XuanZhao is not the tyrant he's made out to be; but with few allies and many enemies, the cursed emperor is struggling to do right by his people.
