Unforgivably stupid story. If I could, this story would have negative stars. For once they actually got the title absolutely right… right up unto the final page! I'm a big reconciliation fan. I cheer for it even when others are condemning the heroine for forgiving too quickly, but that is because the ML has learned his lesson and additional heartbreak really isn’t going to improve things. Here… I’m infuriated. It really felt like the FL just rolled over and became a doormat, right to the very end! SPOILERS AHEAD: So the heroine wants kids and he thinks he can’t provide them. He doesn’t even consider she might be okay with adoption… never even broached the subject round aboutly or otherwise. Just decided to destroy his marriage in the most painful way possible and make her leave. So then he finds out how wrong he was and wants to reconcile. He spent so much time wooing her, proving his sincerity, cherishing her desire to wait BEFORE he married her. Now that he’s been a total cad, deliberately drove her away with his blatant ‘infidelity’ and wants to reconcile, does he explain things? Set out to prove his sincerity? Take the time to rebuild trust while he woos her back? No. Much easier to spend wads of money and just blackmail her back. He forces her to leave all friends, customers, clients and people she cherishes without so much as a moment to say good bye (and who knows what happened to the art gallery this single mother build from scratch by her own effort and with the money she got by selling the home her parents left her when it’s owner disappears overnight? We don’t get to know. She just leaves it behind with nary a comment. It’s never mentioned again.). And after all this man handling, the poor reputation he created with her, AND hearing what she’s been told about WHY he wants his son back, he has the gall to look hurt because she thinks ‘so poorly‘ of him? Seriously? And the end is just as bad. She starts to trust him and then overhears a suspicious conversation (that she SHOULD have been a part of!), and leaves. He catches her at the airport telling her SHE has misunderstood everything, and we get the most ironic statement uttered in the history of HQ. He says he was going crazy thinking he might lose her because of a stupid misunderstanding. She should come to him with questions, he says, and he has HER apologizing!!! Wait a minute! Ask him questions? You mean like she did the first time when you told her you didn't like jealous women? Oh, right. She’s supposed to remember that that heartbreaking moment was when you were trying to drive her away (because there was a misunderstanding regarding your infertility. Wait! Aren’t you supposed to ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU ACT?!?) So, you’re completely worthy of trust now? Yeah. Right (read extreme sarcasm if it is not evident by tone). Grrr! And why is SHE the one apologizing?!? So he felt like he was going crazy, afraid of losing her over a stupid misunderstanding? Him! The man who DELIBERATELY created the basis for that misunderstanding when he drove her away! Does he not even realize what he's saying? He feels like he's going crazy after one hour, and doesn't even recognize that is how he made his wife feel for MONTHS before he threw her away, and even worse after! It's like he thinks because he knew the reason for everything he did is no longer applicable, and that all the hurtful things he did to get her back were, to his mind, justifiable, he can just disregard all the emotional consequences he inflicted upon her and that she's supposed to disregard them as well! Don’t you know you are supposed to forget all those hurtful things I did? I have. Now, how dare you run off because of such a stupid misunderstanding!
They had a chance to redeem him there just a bit. If only he'd followed up with, 'I didn't realize how much it hurt. I can't believe what I put you through! Can you ever forgive me?' But nope! There he is, accepting HER apology for HER misunderstanding, taking no credit for its foundation in the slightest. And if he was serious about setting things right, why didn't he force that wicked-tary to come apologize to his wife in person?!? But no, he moved her? Not fired her, but moved her. For betraying him. For lying to his wife. For trying to destroy his marriage. How generous. Few HQ’s have roused my ire as much as this one.
