A boy escapes and finds a new home with a man without a name. The grow closer as they both learn what it is to be cared for. Gosh that back story is a sad and scary one. I'm glad sora and nagi found eachother.
A nameless man works in the underworld secretly disposing of corpses. He drifts from place to place with almost no contact with other human beings until one day just as he is leaving with a body in tow he is accosted by a cheerful young man who at first asks that he be driven into the city and then asks to live with him since he has no where else to go. Because the young man, named Sora, saw his face and knows what he does for a living, he complies.
I really wish that I had not read the comments, since this is a story that relies heavily on the gradual meting out of information about Sora's past. Going in knowing the premise lessened the experience of reading it - even so, I managed to enjoy it.
The art won't be to everyone's tastes: it's just line drawing with large blocks of black - no textures or shadows whatsoever. As a result, the images look washed out and immediate, like the way people's faces do when they are illuminated by a sudden flash of harsh artificial light. To me, it worked with the liminal atmosphere of the story and the sense of mystery and alienation that suffuses both our main characters.
There is a reason that I have focused mainly on the plot and the art when discussing this story: these are the best parts. The characters are not as interesting as they should be, and while the manga is going for a stripped down subtlety, it crosses the line into excessively minimalistic in storytelling and suffers for it. I don't need everything spelled out and explained, but there is room to add more depth, particularly to the character of the nameless man. Their relationship is sweet and nice, but they are flat and genre-typical in spite of the slightly unusual world in which the story takes place. That being said, I do think it is worth reading if only as a good yarn and a manga with a more interesting visual style. Recommended if you want something very sedate that still remains a decent mystery. No rape/dubcon
