C34 end, love the plot, want side stories
I wish we could see the rebellion ending but eh, whatever I guess it's not detrimental to the MC's relationship to see the end of it.
Also god damm emperor is just a man child like broski grow the fuck up.
Overall short but decent enough read I guess

This is amazing.
THAT PLOT TWIST GAGGED ME SO FUCKING BAD . . . And then it didn't. Because as the last few chapters continued and you could tell they weren't going to do anything with it, it's made clear the plot twist only existed purely as a deus ex machina.
Alec being the rightful heir to the throne—and the baby Lydian refused to kill in the past no less—could have led to such a great story, but they don't do anything with it. It exists as a plot device. It's only there so Alec can quickly find the vampire contract and that's it; he doesn't even tell Lydian about it which I found to be crazy.
The utter lack of impact that such a huge plot twist had is, I feel, emblematic of the story as a whole. It's good in concept but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. It's not necessarily bad, just underwhelming.
The generalized plot is that Alec is brought into Lydian's household after being caught trying to rob him, acting as a servant to make up for his transgression. But it's soon revealed there was a deeper reason behind Lydian taking him in—Lydian has a contract with the king and he wants Alec to sneak into the castle and destroy it.
And like, great concept. I love it. It has vampires, contracts, a vaguely uneven power dynamic, and possible royal drama like it really has it all. But the way everything's written leaves quite a bit to be desired. I feel like there's just not enough 'oomph' to this story. Like Lydian is under contract with the king—all vampires are but Lydian's clause in the contract is a bit unique—which is why Alec is brought in to try and find & destroy the contract, but the king is painted as like . . . A threat. As someone evil and intimidating. When he's just not. We don't see him do anything particularly ruthless or cruel, yet so many characters cowered just mentioning the king's name. The people he ruled over plan a revolt against him and I'm just kind of left wondering why, because he didn't seem like a cruel king. The worst he did was have all vampires under contract, but even then he used them mainly as a police force, and on top of that the average person didn't know vampires existed so it's not like they were revolting because of the vamps' unfair treatment. So why?
Lydian as a character was pretty 'meh' to me, which is painful to say. I fucking love vampires, man. And you have me saying I think a vampire is mid. That's so fucked up. But I just found his storyline, once again, great in concept but muddled in execution. His whole arc, beyond the love story with Alec, is his contractual relationship with the king and his apprehension in actually going with the plan to destroy the contract. He seems to have a soft spot for the king, but also, he views himself as a sacrificial lamb. If he gives himself fully to the king, the other vampires would be fine . . . Which I kind of don't get. The impression I got was that he'd end up dying but it's never explained why. The whole thing felt a bit melodramatic if I'm honest. The situation wasn't shown as being intense enough to really warrant all the emotions it brought out in everyone.
I loved Alec. I initially loved the plot twist of him being the rightful heir to the crown, and I really wish we got a second season or perhaps side stories exploring that more, perhaps having him join the revolt, but oh well. I really liked that Alec was a very emotional, dedicated person. He won't just sit down and take it. He has such an intense, sun-burning passion that I really liked reading. Also he ended up saying to Lydian at one point "you can only drink my blood" which is the type of shit I NEED in vampire romances. The author understood! More should take after her!
Fuck the granny btw. Old hag.
Good but ending felt rushed or it needed more chapters

I like the plot but the ending was quite rushed. Also, Alec's real identity was not revealed in the end so it was a bit lacking. Nevertheless, it was a great story and Lydian is the most precious vampire cinnamon roll that must be protected
see if theres side chaps in future
