Goes to show that good translators and editors are worth their weight in gold. This could have been a much better manga with a better translation. The very literal translation is one of the reasons this story seems so choppy. There are huge differences between Japanese and English language, a translation that smoothly accounts for those can make the reading experience much better.

Don't give up at the beginning.
I have struggled with the first volumes and almost gave up on it. But I'm glad I didn't. It's definitely one of the better mangas around. Despite all the logical errors, one encounters here and there. After a slow and almost boring low-level beginning, the pace levels up constantly towards a frantic finale. And although the story isn't totally original and you constantly have the feeling of having seen the concepts somewhere else, the mix of mystery, action and romance is what makes it a really enjoyable experience.
I don't really get the ending, and I would surely prefer another one. But it was on a level to move me to tears.
