I've known about this for a while, ofc, but I never had any desire to read it. Mainly cuz I thought it was way longer than it actually is LOL. I just don't like sitting through long tragedies, but finding out it's only 21 chapters made me interested in it for the first time. I'm sooo glad I read it tho. Finally a story that's popular for a reason.
I like how it shows boys being raised to resort to violence, while girls don't face that same expectation. The two boys immediately raise their guns at each other, and their first reaction to the missile going off is to lash out in fear and attack each other. They don't try to hide or protect themselves or the person they're with, all they can think of is trying to kill the other person. That lines up with another thing I like about this story... it doesn't show humans as inherently evil. I rlly hate stories that do that it irks me. The boy doesn't start immediately resorting to violence until he's taught to do that by someone else. Even when he attacked the strange man at the start that wasn't his first thought. He initially just wanted to run away, and didn't turn to attacking him until he had no other choice. I like the criticisms it has against cycles of violence & revenge.
Continuing on that... I'm glad this story was anti war not anti human. It's really easy for stories like this to fall on nihilism, which I find incredibly uninteresting, so I like that this doesn't do that. I'd go so far S to say it's an optimistic story. It's dark and horrible things happen, it doesn't want to pretend the world is always flowery and beautiful, but it wants to look forward and hope for the best. With love and perseverance things will get better, even if it takes a few generations for that to happen.
The art is also amazing. It's so perfect at setting the tone, and I love how it controls pacing. I love how it uses wide compositions with a lot of negative space to really reinforce how alone & small the kids are in the world. They're fighting against something so much bigger than themselves and all they can do is keep moving into the vast unknown.
Really beautiful & powerful story. I'm glad it's only 21 chapters for a few reasons... One cuz I never would've read it if it was longer. Two cuz I think it's much more impactful to tell a story like this in fewer chapters. It hits harder when it's something you can read in one or two sittings.
