Person A and B are childhood friends.
A suffers from domestic abuse or is an orphan.
B is lonely and an only child of a rich parent.
A is more protective of B as children. B doesn't speak much.
They  promise to always stay together. 
Something traumatic happens (usually involves death). A forgets about B. B moves far away because rich parents.

They reunite as adults. B remembers A but A doesn't know who B is (due to trauma). B now has a colder personality. A is still the same.
