Yoshiwara was a red-light district in Edo period (1600s) which serves to provide the rich a supply an Oiran (present day Geisha). In this manga, Yoshiwara is brought back as a legalized prostitute centre in the modern period. The female lead, Asuka, must navigate the Yoshiwara to pay back her parents debt and get the fuck out of Yoshiwara.
less seriously-drawn version of juuoku no are, but talks about prostitution as well in a rather realistic way
talks about polygamous marriages, "ugly truth" about love
talks about coming of age, the difficulties of artist in breaking into their own industry
talks about the depth of human characters, depression, unaliving oneself, unaliving oneself together, coming of age, first sexual experiences, this is pretty dark so please proceed w/ caution.
one of my comfort works, explores the human psyche in a very subtle way that we are able to relate to the characters deeply, manipulation tactics, siblings rivalry, patriarchy
talks about dealing with grief of losing someone, finding solace in others, class differences
no person in this world is black and white, we're all complex character
