One of my favorite manga of all time. Somehow it goes from what seems to be an ecchi comedy to a psychological manga. It perfectly displays the struggles of puberty and different phases while being an adolescent. The main character knows two girls, and each girl represents a choice, conform to society or to hell with it. Similar to the way the actual book, flowers of evil is represented, it can only truly be enjoyed by those who understand it.
(Happiness and Chi no Wadachi are tied for 2nd place)
Happiness is one of Shuzo Oshimi's only manga that actual includes monsters, in this case, vampires. Somehow this fucking genius of a man was able to convey the struggles of being non-human while still having substance. He highlights the problems with cults, being alienated, and most importantly, the pain and suffering of living forever.
This is my most recent read from shuzo oshimi. This manga perfectly displays possessiveness, generational trauma, and PTSD. I cannot put my thoughts on this manga into words, so just give it a go anyways. Plus, the art in this manga stands out from his other works with the use of hatching found in many junji ito works.
A mindfuck from start to finish. One of the things that I hate but also love about Oshimi's works is that I can often find them relatable in some way, whether convoluted or surface level. The experiences of Mari and the desire to finish the manga are what drove me to binge this work
