not explicitly queer, but i do feel like there are some themes to it; particularly with gender norms and not "fitting in"

this manga explores what it means to be a girl -- from a trans girl's perspective, as well as a cis girl's one. in a struggle to understand what it means to be trans, the protagonist navigates what gender presentation, as well as her own attraction to women means to her!!

whether maria is trans or not, doesn't really matter i feel. boy meets maria is about two people who are doing their best to understand each other, and themselves!!!

wow...that panel where tenma says that no one would ever be serious about a man like him. i had to put my phone away because it was honestly so quietly heartbreaking. i don't think the writer intended for tenma to be trans or anything like that, but that panel came off as an allusion as tenma being not just queer (sexuality wise) ...but also trans. the deliberate use of the word queer for him is so satisfying as well.
