FL is an amazingly complex character, a feast for those who like discussions of living in oppressive environments. Red light districts and the Harem are two comparable entities. To the FL though, this is simply reality, which she endures, finding ways to enjoy life despite her struggle, just like everyone else. She finds power through her cleverness and wisdom.
ML is interesting, but often comes across as creepy, due to the power imbalance that the FL is painfully aware of.
A cute, well crafted story of fairy-like tiny people and talking animals. A lot of androgyny, ambiguous romance, and life lessons. The miniature lifestyles of all the people are very fun as well.
Fun, I love anything influenced by Rumiko Takahashi. The style is very nostalgic and the story is nice and silly. It reminds me of Ranma 1/2, an odd ball manga from my childhood. An aggressive case of unrequited love, I’d even call it doomed. Kind of realistic in that way.
Beautiful, complex art to match a compelling story. It is on an extremely long hiatus, I don’t know if it will ever be finished. It’s based off of a real life Japanese philosopher. There’s a lot of discussion in the manga about masculinity, fear of death, cycle of violence, etc.
Such a unique interpretation of ancient Japanese folklore/religion. Shintoism is such an interesting religion. It’s not meant to be entirely accurate and mostly focuses on the most important deities, which makes sense. Shinto is a religion full of local gods and mythos, meaning that two towns near each other can worship entirely different gods of the pantheon, which this manga encapsulates perfectly!
The way the gods are visualized is wonderfully unique as well.
A captivating take on what a conscious race of immortals would be like and how demons work as creatures built to hunt humans. The tragedy of immortality itself is not a new concept, but the way its explored in Frieren is what kept me hooked. From the endearing people of her past to her new entourage, the characters are well crafted.
Really well crafted art. There’s a lot of really nice fashion and the classic “demonic angel and angelic demon”. Although the demon isn’t entirely angelic, she is the straight man compared to her angel counterpart. A cute pair of the worlds most destructive besties.
A story of abuse, the patriarchy, sex work, gried, and finding happiness. Sex work is written with a rare complexity but in the setting of an Isekai fantasy. The MC is depressingly used to the brothel’s environment and it brings up how some young people end up in the industry. It’s by no means perfect but it really hits home at times. It’s a little like apothecary diary’s, finding happiness during your oppression.
New found freedom and self discovery of a young girl. Many people are told growing up that they need to settle for someone they don’t truly like, especially when it comes to heteronormativity. This story is a unique way of saying that one guy isn’t actually the only option. It’s a lesson about consent!
Probably the most accurate story about sex work on this site. I think it’s a very valuable manga in understanding sex work with more depth. Sad at some parts, funny at others. Holds a little spot in my heart.
