Since the death of his twin brother Mei three years ago, Akane has been living with Mei's lover Keisuke, who Akane's always loved, and acting as Mei's replacement. Though Keisuke is always gentle with Akane, treating him as a precious family member, Keisuke's kindness fills Akane with guilt, as the reason Akane acts as Mei's replacement is to punish himself for Mei's death, which Akane believes is his fault.
When Mikoshiba goes to visit his older brother, Kenichi, he walks in on his brother having sex with his strict superior Houjou. But, the two break up due to Kenichi cheating and seeing Houjou's upset, Mikoshiba invites him to drink and vent. Drunk, Houjou mistakes Mikoshiba, who is similar to Kenichi in appearance and taste, for Kenichi and after becoming irritated with the mistake Mikoshiba realizes his feelings. Unwilling to be just a substitute, Mikoshiba tries to make Houjou see him for him.
Ch. 2: When his twin sister Yumeko gets a boyfriend, Yumeji offers to be her substitute for his childhood friend Yuu
After collapsing from overwork, Nagisa returns to his hometown in the countryside. While fixing up his grandfather's old house, Nagisa is reunited with his childhood friend Kaito. Nagisa hadn't wanted to meet with Kaito because in high school Kaito had blamed him for the accidental death of their friend and mutual crush Minato. Though when they talk Kaito acts like nothing happed, so feeling guilty and wanting to be punished, Nagisa asks Kaito to hold him as a replacement for Minato.
Hazuki is a socially awkward and earnest member of the product planning department, who hates seeing couples in public and his coworker Watanabe. Watanabe is a popular member of the same department that Hazuki thinks he is superficial. But, Hazuki's feelings change when Watanabe invites Hazuki to eat with him at his house on the weekend. Rui explains the cause of his tears is the suicide of his teacher and lover, an artist at the exhibit, that he believes was his fault. Distraught and wanting a distraction, Rui, making use of his obvious interest, seduces Kazushi and the two begin a relationship. However, after 3 years, Rui is still grieving his teacher and has plans to follow him.
Ch. 1-3.1: Jun has secretly loved Hayato since high school, but, at the time, Hayato was dating his beautiful childhood friend Motoki. Years later, Jun is now dating Hayato, after he took a drunk Hayato home from the bar he worked for. However, Jun believes he's just a substitute for Motoki and this feeling only intensifies when Hayato, without explaining anything, tells Jun he has a friend coming and not to come to his place for a while and Jun finds out that friend is Motoki
