Absolutely my favorite seinen manga of ALL TIME. I've read this 4 times now and will still read it again.
Gritty, very violent, Freesia dables in themes of war, trauma, mental health, and the notion of revenge. I don't wanna give too much away as I feel people should just pick this up and find out for themselves what this series is about. Just know, once Freesia clicks, you will definitely be coming back for a second or third read.
INNNOUEEEEE!!! DROP THE BIGGEST MOST INSANE FINALE OF VAGABOND, AND MY ENTIRE BLOODLINE IS YOURS!!!!!!!
I warn anyone who wants to get into one of the greatest titles in seinen history by THE seinen legend, Takehiko Inoue: Vagabond is stuck on an indefinite hiatus due to Inoue-sensei losing interest and starting his current passion project, "Real". It stops at an insane cliffhanger, so go into this with the understanding you may never see the end to this masterpiece.
A certified classic by the legend, Kentaro Miura, may he rest in peace.
Only advice I can give: reading comprehension is mandatory, otherwise you'll make the mistake of rooting for the wrong people. Berserk asks the question: who is truly the villain, and who ends up hurt from their actions? Trauma takes time to heal from, but when you're stuck in a vicious cycle of violence, it's hard to even begin the process.
Kouta-sensei's work is kind of a staple in the seinen space, and Hellsing is his best one.
Taking place in WWII England, we see a unique take on both the war and the classic Dracula story, mixing in gunslinging and the usual Kouta humor and flare. Alucard is a badass and delight to behold. Highly recommend, honestly I consider it required reading for horror manga fans; Hellsing is such a classic.
Also the Abridged series is worth a watch; hasn't aged well but it's hella funny.
Read the manga, watch the anime; Mushi-shi is an underrated masterpiece. It's a soothing story despite delving into darker themes. I love watching Ginko in action, and I love seeing the stories of the various people he helps or comes across. This is a series that depicts a world where nature and humans are both in harmony and conflict, simply due to to the fact that these two very different entities must coexist together despite not really knowing each other's presence.
Similar to works like Mushi-Shi and Apothecary Diaries, we have another tale, set in a fictitious historic world, of a medicine seller that's more than what they seem. Our unnamed Medicine-Seller seeks to rid the world of "Mononoke" adversaries born from the malice of humans.
If you follow the anime, this is essentially a prequal, delving into the events before the second story in the animated series.
Arguably Sakamoto-sensei's best work, "Innocent" (and Innocent Rouge) is a beautiful and horrifying take on the French Revolution, focusing on the royal executioner who invested in the iconic guillotine, Charles Henri-Sanson. It's an incredible tale with incredible art, you'll often find yourself staring at a panel simply because of how detailed and whimsical it is.
"Innocent" is the first half of the series, followed by "Innocent Rouge".
The second half of the "Innocent" series, "Innocent Rouge" has everything great about the first half and more. It shifts it's focus to our incredible female lead, Marie-Joseph Sanson, as well as all the main players involved in the Revolution and death of the royal family.
I would honestly argue that Marie is the true main character of the series, as her development is a lot more interesting.
A very surreal depiction of the classic Dracula story by the great Shinichi Sakamoto. It's got coming-of-age, the macabre, gender identity, and a dash of humor. Worth it for fans of Sakamoto-sensei's work or those into a dramatic horror story with incredible art.
Fujimoto's best work. Chainsaw Man would not exist without Fire Punch. There are so many parallels with it (and some of his oneshots).
It has questionable themes like incest which is common in Fujimoto (and Japanese) work, but aside from that, it's an intense read.
Really hoping MAPPA decides to animate this as well.
