Serious Mangas

A compilation of shounen ai or yaoi mangas that approach more serious topics. Admittedly, the definition of "serious" can be very broad, and this list is for my own reference than anything else.

These mangas will be separated into the following categories:

1: Twisted Manga: A manga that deals with dark themes.
2: General Manga: A manga that deals with serious themes, but not necessarily dark ones.
3: LP Manga: A "Light Plot" manga has a lighthearted atmosphere, but a heavy, underlying plot.
4: One Shot: Self explanatory. A manga will not be labeled as a one shot if it has more than one chapter, regardless of its official label.

These mangas will be rated by the following categories on a 1 to 5 scale (1 being the best, and 5 being the worst):

*Please keep in mind that all of these ratings are extremely subjective, as this list really is for my own reference.

A: Art: This depends heavily on my personal preference. I may rate a manga with awesome art very lowly simply because it doesn't suit my personal tastes. Take this rating with a grain of salt.

C: Characterization: How consistent is the character throughout the story? Is the character multi-faceted, or is his personality dependent on one trait? Does the character react realistically to the situation at hand?

D: Development: (Also known as pacing.) Does the manga move at an appropriate speed? How is the couple handled? Are important plot points (or twists) revealed appropriately?

P: Plot: Is the plot interesting? Is it well fleshed out? Does it seem natural or forced?

S: Side Story: How is the side story handled? Is it actually developed, or simply some last minute add on? Are the characters from the side story interesting?

A slight expansion of the rating system:

1: Best: Perfect. No words are needed; I am absolutely stunned.
2: Good: It's handled pretty well, but it has few drawbacks that distract me from its advantages.
3: Adequate: Readable. Not too good, not too bad.
4: Bad: It's handled rather badly, but it has a few edges that lets me turn a blind eye to it.
5: Worst: Ugh. I'm surprised this didn't ruin the whole manga for me.

This is a teacher/student relationship done /right/, goddamn it. Their first encounter is very meaningful, and I really love how their relationship develops. Also, I felt that the characters reacted quite realistically to the situation, which made the story feel much more tangible.

Ahh, I love Kiriya so much. Yuuya is cute as well, but Kiriya has a certain charm that draws me in.

I really enjoyed this manga! It's one of the pursuit mangas I legitimately enjoyed. What I really loved was that the uke has a tendency to spell out his love, whereas the seme displays it through his actions. And the author manages to capture both of these affections very well.

The development also felt natural to me, even with the early confession. 10/10 would recommend.

Both of the stories here were really adorable. There are two stories: one features a heartbroken protagonist, and the other features two childhood friends. I actually expected to like the latter story better, but I fell hard for the former.

The only complaint I have is of the somewhat rushed pacing (in both stories), but I always complain about pacing. So this is probably more of a personal issue, haha.

10/10 would recommend.

I wasn't very fond of the main story, simply because the plot never fully caught my attention. I couldn't understand the seme's obsession either, so that threw me off a bit.

But I loved the second story. Sure, it had some dirty elements and the seme was a dick, but I think that's what made it worthwhile. People are far from perfect, and the second story shows that those imperfections can be handled with honesty and communication.

Eh, not my favorite. I disliked how the manga brushed off cheating, and I detested how the seme came to fall for the uke. He's supposedly some butterfly of the night, but he didn't strike me as particularly charming.

Also, while I'm an absolute sucker for queen ukes, I felt that the dominating uke trope was pushed way too much in this manga. To me, that felt like the sole focus of the manga, and thus the plot felt quite bland.
