really top drawer!

four and five star manga, mostly BL.  my picks oscillate mainly between slice of life and fluffy, with dashes of angst and smut for good measure.

what a fun manga. hashiwaya is a pretty unique guy and hibino is the perfect foil. liked the depiction of uncertainty in starting a relationship, and the first sexing actually made me laugh out loud. decent art.

ohhh so good pure love. the first couple are two part-timers, one rich and sheltered and the other poor. the second story is the standout- the butler who raised the rich kid and the shop owner- i can't remember the last time a story made my heart skip a beat like this one did. i wish there was more, but what was there was perfect. then a story about reunited childhood friends. gentle, sweet, beautifully drawn and told stories about love and mutual respect.

i seriously love this. everything about this is great. tsumabuki may be the sweetest guy in the history of yaoi, so lovestruck he puts up with everything the universe has to throw at him to stay with satou-san. nice art, super sweet, touching story, really great read.

this is a rare manga- there are parts of it that are ridiculous, overwrought, too hard to take, unbelievable, and the art is soo 90s it hurts a little. but damn. damn does it hit the feels. even though some of it is dated, and times have changed for the better, the life stuff- coming out, finding acceptance, falling in love- all of that stuff is perfect and moving and i cried or teared up several times reading this. a must read.

totally adorable. oodoi-san is interesting, and akira is a genuinely nice guy, but communication is not their strong suit. nice art, really sweet and fun story about acts of kindness.

stories about artists, mostly. the first, about a dancer and an actor is really intriguing, and i wish it were longer. this author also seems to have a fascination with carmen. next is an artist and a dealer, about working through a block. next, musicians, and who plays for whom and why. the following stories are about loss and belonging, and are really beautiful, made me tear up. ('nero' and the belated homecoming story). very nice art, well told stories.

unique one- and two-shots. the main story is an art history mystery and is really fun and rather sweet. the flamenco one is a little all over the place, but i think the restlessness matches the energy of the MC. en el parque is heartbreaking, i actually cried a little. the extras are nice, too. great art, and writing, as always.

some of the dialogue and actions in this struck me as so realistic, intimate, and beautiful- it may be about memory loss and rekindling feelings on the surface, but this is also a love letter to the sexiness of the everyday. i found that really refreshing. i think some of the names are switched in places, but the art is really beautiful and the story is both sweet and sexy.

two really nice stories. first is a once hopeful, now jaded teacher who meets a former student as he becomes a new, hopeful teacher- about being honest with yourself and society and standing up for your own place. next is the other student teacher and a brusque, loner-type teacher. while both story arcs deal with removing barriers, the second one is a little more light-hearted, and about learning to care for others. nice art.

younger neighbor decides he's in love with the shinto priest. actually pretty good- moves at a believable pace, actions seem to happen fairly naturally, and the author manages to build a fair amount of tension around the priest's feelings. decent art- i don't normally like this style, but maybe the sweetness of the story made it more bearable.

What can a LIST do?

You may feel your favorite manga should be gathered together into distinct categories for your own reference and, now, you can do this with a LIST. After you've created your list or lists, you can proudly recommend them to other manga fans to showcase and share your taste in manga.

What’s top drawer means? Top arts? Or mangas that always draw you to re-read them again and again? XD I love your list btw...

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy the list! I always wondered if people understood the reference in the title, so I am so glad you asked about it! And your take on its meaning would have never occurred to me, even though I really do appreciate great art in manga. So, thank you for sharing that.

Anyway, the drawer in 'top drawer' is like a chest of drawers, one you pull out of the wall or a cabinet and put stuff in. The phrase 'really top drawer' is old slang meaning 'of good quality.' It's in the movie 'Auntie Mame' (the Rosalind Russell version)- this snobby woman refers to some of her equally snobby friends as being 'really top drawer' and I always thought it was a funny phrase, so I used it for the title of my list of (in my opinion) 'top quality' manga. You can look up the phrase on YouTube, it's only a couple seconds long and it's worth hearing in all it's affected glory.

Thanks again for asking, you made my day!

Hey I love this list, I'm so glad you put your opinion in the notes too because it helps me get an idea of what to expect more than just the description. Love this, tysm for putting it together. It certainly is "top drawer"!
