This is not sarcasm or anything but what’s the difference??? Besides yaoi being outdated and everything. Like uhmm what affect would it make? Is it bad to use the term yaoi? I just want to know cause I’ve been reading yaois and bls for so long now that I don’t notice much difference. Please help me understand better ┗( T﹏T )┛
I get it but if girls are only reading for the smut = fetishizing gay men, does that mean when pple watch str8 porn, they’re also fetishizing them? I mean some yaoi are technically porn (djs, porn w/o plot) just like how str8 porn are and most fanfics. And isn’t it just like how men prefers to watch lesbian or read yuri?? Again this is just plainly curiosity, I don’t mean anything behind my questions.
BL is a much less problematic term in my opinion. Even manga publishing companies are starting to stray away from the term and opt for BL instead. BL is also alot more universal it is literally any fictional media that depicts an mlm relationship. A good example of the misuse of the word yaoi would be with Yuri on ice. People describe things like yuri on ice as a yaoi when its really just a sports anime with BL. Given the problematic nature of the word i feel it'd be more appropriate and respectful to use it rather than just watering it down to some "yaoi", ygm?
I feel like you missed my point but its fine. shounen ai directly translates to boys love, but can also be translated as a term for romantic relationships between young boys and older men. https://futekiya.com/what-is-shounen-ai/ this article sums it up pretty well, and also outlines how much BL is used outside of western audiences.
sorry to butt in but yaoi is outdated because it's hardly even used in japan anymore outside of some doujinshi sites. the term refers to mlm parody fan work doujinshi with no plot and it's not necessarily sexual. the "sexual yaoi" and the "pure wholesome fluffy shounen ai" are just made up by western fan spaces. (ironic how shounen ai is actually about pederasty and pedophilia.) it's better to just call them all BL. you can always use nsfw or sfw if you want to make a distinction between those with sex scenes and those that don't. cmiiw
I will leave this link here there was vast discussion on it -

I would say just cuz japan stopped using this word why we should I m just stating, open tht link there was whole as explanation tht u r tryin to convey here don't get me wrong I m old yaoi reader and I find yaoi word more suitable world do not work on specific thing there r different people and many people find yaoi word in short to find anything.
because the japanese people made it. it's their term, their language, a part of their culture, and they don't want outsiders to misuse it. yet you're here, still prefering to use the word incorrectly when you already know better. you're just helping to reinforce the negative connotations wether you mean to or not by making distinctions. i get that it's easier to use yaoi or shounen ai when searching works but outside of that, i really don't think there's a point. it's not that hard to say BL
for the link you sent, yes i've read it but it seems like you haven't or you just chose to ignore those that don't agree with you. i suggest you also read the google docs link that was in one of the replies. it has lengthy explanations about various aspects based on credible sources
I really wish this website would kill the term "yaoi" and finally just roll with BL bc like yaoi is such an outdated term and ppl misuse it all the time yknow.
