I realise this is a story from a few years ago, but the sight of this cook hoovering over his pans with his eternal cigarette in his mouth still makes me want to barf. When I was young, we had a cook like that in our office: now and then, there were ashes dropping off his fag in the pots. Yeuch! I'll pass this curry thing, thanks. Too many chapters anyway, and they all look alike. I read untill about the 3th chapter, then I couldn't stand the sight of that smoking cook anymore. Plus, I fell asleep (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜
Really? Ha ha ha! Good thing manga aren't colored, else they'd have to have colored it brown and we'd found out right away, or we'd taken it for a cigar, which is even worse, stenchwise... I guess I'd never have known it if you hadn't told me, since as I said I only got till the third chapter. Aside from the "smoking" chef, I got bored with the lack of excitement and humor in the story. I've read so many manga that are stretched out endlessly, with nothing but the same old gimmick every time (like a new curry in each chapter in this one), an unbearably slow love story, and nothing else; so I've stopped after 3 chapters. But in general, I think manga characters smoke too much anyway. Maybe mangaka are all smokers? To cope with the stress of having to draw too many chapters in too little time?

I know, I think it is just in the culture: if you want to make a character cool= make them smoke
mmm. I don't know about that culture-thing... It used to be considered "cool" over here in Europe and in America too, but bit by bit we found out it was a yucky addiction that caused all sorts of diseases, not just for those who smoked, but also for those who had to breathe in their smoke. And so, bit by bit, those who didn't smoke changed from 'annoying naggers' to people who had the force of being right, who had science and proven Fact on their side, and the politicians followed making laws against smoking. It took a lot of fighting against the tobacco industry, lawsuits and all that; but right now, there's a distinct difference in mentality between countries where smoking is a no-no, and countries where laws and public haven't reached that point yet. My guess Japan is getting there slowly, and China and India are following, but quite behind. Unfortunately, this murderous tobacco industry is now targeting Africa, trying aggressive publicity to make the people start smoking the way they did us decades ago: smoking is cool, you know the drill? Come to Malboro country... We will see the change in Japanese mentality while reading manga drawn by younger artists, in a few years, I guess. There's always a time lapse between the moment the artist makes a manga and the moment when we see it translated on these sites... But I don't think it has anything to do with culture. By the way, come to think of it: chewing on a cinnamon stick all day long isn't all that good an idea either, at least for a cook! If you were to do that for real, your mouth would go completely numb and all you'd taste would be cinnamon, nothing else. How is one supposed to cook meals like that? You've got to taste, haven't you? Think about it... Cinnamon is strong stuff, you know... wont give you lung cancer, but still, in the end your tongue would start feeling dead...
