Beware of Demons

Complete | Penicillium | 2000 released

Yeah, no- That wasn't an end. It was rushed as fuck, and I have many questions. Who's the fellow that instigated shit, was used as a tool to make the protagonist's sister interested in the human dude that crushed on her, and then just walked off after giving his phone number? He was THE most interesting character and a boatload of wasted potential. Hey, far be it from me to tell someone how to write or do something, but this was all extremely rushed towards the end - though the author, I think, was trying to tell us that towards the last chapter anyway. Despite that, art is pretty, plot is okay, and I like how the message conveyed is learning to rely on other people... But they made the protagonist almost get potentially fucked (quite literally) with no damn consent in the last four chapters out of NOWHERE, just so he could yell for the love interest and just created more questions. Why bother to create a whole powerhouse side of our protagonist that's locked up... just for that to happen? Why even introduce that scene at all? Did his parents always know that he had all this power and he was led to believing he was weak? Was Gale there just to go 'Oh hey, Simon, I have a crush on you, even though I'm your best friend and I'm talented and hella smart - but for the sake of this plot, my love for you is gonna be unrequited!'- Okay, look, I'm salty and may have gotten attached to a few characters, but though it's a good story, no doubt about it - we don't even get anything truly established. So it gets three stars for keeping me entertained for a bit when I read it a while ago.

Helck

Complete | Nanao Nanaki | 2000 released

Combining one of my favourite genres of all time - adventure - and imbuing it with a beautiful, fantastical mix of fantasy, Helck delivers in terms of action, tragedy and the author themself simply radiates positivity. This reading initially started because I borrowed Helck 1-4 at the library, but then I wished to know how it continued and how it ended. To do that, I also went on the official site (where the chapters are in better order there), where the onslaught of tragedy was intermittently broken up by orderly little character adventures. This is an all-round favourite tale for it's honest message of having continual hope, dealing with life with someone beside you, and it's blatant and unapologetic lack of overly romantic love.
