The Beast Must Die

Complete | Lee hyeon sook | 2019 released

Fascinating, disturbing, and deeply sensual, this story explores violence and the human condition in a way I have never seen before in the BL genre. The artwork is breathtaking and the sex scenes are incredibly intense. But the thing that sets this BL apart is the character development and the way the story unfolds. In every chapter new information is presented that alters your perspective of what came before. Simply Thrilling, you won't be able to look away! ***Spoilers thoughts*** I felt that the most valuable asset to this story was in some ways also its Achilles heel. (last chance spoilers ahead) That would be Kang Moo being a criminal psychopath, while psychopathy is a spectrum it is communicated that Kang Moo has "no emotions." In many ways this is the story's most invaluable asset because when characters do not act on their emotions it is impossible for the audience to anticipate their actions, thus making the story incredibly intriguing. However, despite the murder and intrigue at the heart of The Beast Must Die is a "romance" between Kang Moo and Lee Kirin. We are shown on several occasions that Lee Kirin is deeply emotionally attached to Kang Moo. But Kang Moo states that he is a psychopath and has no emotions, any time he shows concern it is him displaying his "learned behavior." This is where things began to get vague for me. It was hard to truly enjoy their relationship when Lee Kirin clearly wants to be with him and loves Kang Moo, while Kang Moo is not able to feel anything. But there have been several examples throughout the story of Kang Moo acting in ways that were not logical or would not benefit him purely because Lee Kirin was involved. So here's the rub, we are asked to accept that Kang Moo feels nothing for Lee Kirin but also that he will make choices based on emotional responses to Lee Kirin. I loved this story and it will forever be on my top 10. However, I wish that their relationship was not left so ambiguous. It is clear that they are going to be together for the rest of their lives, and I'm not saying that the author should have included an "I love you" moment between the two of them because that just wouldn't have fit. But I feel that there should have been a clear moment when Kang moo communicated to Lee Kirin that he favored him in some emotional way, and for Lee Kirin to accept those feeling and reciprocate. These are of course my own thoughts and opinions in any case I loved it! Thank you to the author!

Interview with a Murderer

Complete | KJK | 2018 released

A compelling story about a twisted killer and an arrogant man who flys too close to the flame.

Warehouse

Complete | Team Killerwhale | 2016 released

The perfect Thriller! Make no mistake, despite this being highly ranked in the Yaoi category this is a compelling psychological thriller. With complex characters who all are deeply flawed, we find ourselves wondering whether or not the MC should escape the warehouse. Once I started this one I simply couldn't stop, it was an adrenaline rush from beginning to end. ***Spoiler thoughts*** In the second half/ (after chapter 44) when Dohyun finally snaps mentally and goes into a catatonic state, there is a shift in the relationship and their story. But it's clear that the reason he is dependant on Sungho due to trauma and not due to real emotions. But even at the end, we as the audience can't be sure that Dohyun's desire to be with Sungho is based on true emotions and not a result of his abuse. I think that this ambiguity makes for a compelling psychological story. I really, really enjoyed this story! If you are looking for another psychological thriller with a similar flavor, I recommend "The Beast Must Die."

So normally I don't write my thoughts until a work is completed but this already has 59 chapters and I need to get some thoughts off my chest so... ***SPOILERS*** The overall concept is very compelling. I would also like to say it was refreshing that Yul's and his Hyun's relationship was not sexual in nature. Normally the hero of these kinds of obsession/stalker stories is the object of the stalker's sexual desires and victim to the stalker's sexual assault but no matter how the stalker may have felt deep inside, he never did anything about it (hasn't as of ch 59.) My one pet peeve!!! Overall I enjoyed Luan and Yul's relationship, although Luan knows he has more power he purposefully gives Yul choices to give him a sense of control over his life, and wants to have a healthy relationship with Yul. BUT THIS MOTHERFUCKER!!!!! Luan pressures the shit of of Yul to have sex with him, in the early chapters he won't shut up about "can I put it in? let me put it in! I know you will like it if I put it in." And Yul says no repeatedly, he isn't ready for sex. Until Luan basically wears him down by saying "will you let me put it in, it will feel good for both of us." Guess what, first time sex of any kind is usually uncomfortable because people get nervous and tense. So he basically just lied to this guy who is too sheltered to know better cause he wanted to bang him. Ugh, that really pissed me off. But although the sex feels a bit coercive it is not rape and I guess that makes it a win for the BL genera.
