Ronoue Yuri's manga / #drama(35)

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi

Ongoing | nakamura shungiku | 2006 released

I really love this manga! All the pairings, aside from Yoshiyuki and Chiaki are really adorable together. I find myself fangirling at the romantic moments between the Kou x Shouta pairing and the Masamune x Ritsu pairing. It's at the same time, a fantasy, because I always find myself envious of these characters because the romance feels real, yet the characters aren't. I hope I can fall in love like that myself and drown in the sweet sea of love..................

I like the premise of the story, the characters are interesting, but more than anything; I'd hate to see Ryūnosuke end up with Daniel. I'm a strong believer of the idea that your parent will always be your parent, regardless of blood ties, if they raise you with the love and affection they would provide to their own child. Ryū is several years younger than Daniel. Daniel is his father, no matter what. Ryū is aware that his feelings for Daniel are impure and he should never forget that. I believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being gay. That's a realistic dilemma that Daniel faces with his step-son. His relationship towards Ryū is that of parent and child and must always remain that way. Even if it is hard to accept, Daniel should accept that his son's sexuality is a part of who he is. He can't deny that part of himself.

I don't usually read Yuri manga, but this one gave me a pleasant surprise. The depiction of same sex love and the like seemed genuine and was super interesting to read! I enjoyed the depiction of some of the realities and the little difficulties members of the LGBT community face in Japan. It isn't overly exaggerated, but is made clear as something that exists and shouldn't be judged as something wrong. The manga has it's fluffy moments, but the little struggles the girls experience in their journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance was very touching. I especially enjoyed reading Mika's thoughts on same-sex relationships and feel that I can relate, as a closeted gay (young) man. Mayu and her brother are really cute characters, not to say that the other main characters aren't. I definitely would like to see a spinoff featuring Mayu's brother and maybe a continuation of the manga as a whole, expanding on Mayu and Saki's respective pursuits for love and the progression of Takako's relationship with Yui.

I really enjoyed reading this manga. The gayngst was too real on this manga. I felt that the emotions and interactions of (and between) Masayuki and Kei felt genuine, which is really commendable for such a short story. The drama didn't feel contrived, narmy or superficial and I could feel Masayuki's inferiority complex seeping out of him. Unfortunately, this poor cinnamon roll was chosen to be the buttmonkey in the beginning of the story. Being overshadowed by a near perfect older brother and not being acknowledged or rewarded for the effort put into the work Masayuki did really messed him up. I really dislike Hajime and their dad for that reason. Neither tried looking into Masayuki's problem. The shitty dad was always crushing his poor self esteem and the idiotic air-headed Hajime never stopped to think that Masayuki harboured a deep inferiority complex against him since childhood. Ultimately, I'm just glad that Masayuki earned his happy ending. I genuinely felt moved from reading his struggles and to earn that happy ending atbthe end really made this a worthwhile read.

Aoi is so cute! Even though his circumstances were bad, he always managed to put on a smile and remain optimistic in the face of various obstacles. I really enjoyed reading this story and would love to see how it ends!

This manga is alright, but I have several issues with it. For starters, the first uke keeps doing these mental gymnastics about how he's straight. When you enjoy having any kind of sexual contact with a partner of the same sex, that is proof that you are not as straight as you'd like to think you are. Secondly, the sex scenes are really violent. I'm a romanticist, so I guess that this disturbed me a little. Of course, one can't expect real life relationships to be fluffy puppy love, but still. Third issue is how we have the seme constantly demanding proof that uke-kun reciprocates his feelings. I have understood that his parents were the cold and distant type, because he thinks he can buy the affections of people he likes. That's really sad in my opinion, when someone says that the only way they know how to solve problems is to use money. Fourth issue is to do with the serious lack of communication. When you feel a certain way towards someone you're interested in, you need to sit down and communicate your feelings, otherwise the other party won't understand! People aren't mind readers. Why does seme-kun make assumptions about his partner's feelings, thinks he knows how his uke feels and act without properly communicating his feelings? Fifth issue is related to the ex-lover of the seme in the second pairing. Randomly punching an innocent guy is not good, just because he found out that the dude he had lingering feelings for, used that innocent dude to get even with him. Then, AFTER his wedding, he immediately divorces that poor lady who he deceived because he regretted letting go of his lover. That is not cool. It goes back to my problem with these guys doing mental gymnastics to justify choices they'll regret because they are pressured by societal expectations. I can understand that, but like I said, if you are a guy who is attracted to a guy you had sexual contact with, you're not as straight as you'd like to think you are. Stop denying your true feelings and follow your heart. If there is love, you shouldn't be conflicted with the sex of your partner. Love between two people is beautiful and that bond cannot be denied by anyone. (Paedophilia, Necrophilia, Incest, Bestiality and all similar sexual perversions however, is NOT beautiful and can never be justifiable)

Really enjoying so far. Tian-Hu's mom is a bitch. I'll wait to see how it'll end.

Akatsuki no Yona

This is one of the best stories I've ever had the pleasure of reading. In a setting loosely based on Korea's Three Kingdoms Period, a historical action fantasy romance story like this one is a gem for one who loves history and learning about other cultures. The people, however, practice a culture that's more of a fusion of traditional Korean, Chinese and Japanese culture. A classical coming-of-age story that everyone should definitely read! Its got drama, action, comedy and romance fitted together in one hell of a fantastic story!

An interesting manhwa to be sure. It explores concepts that are unconfortable to discuss on a daily basis and feels real. Maybe a bit too real...I'll look forward to seeing how the story progresses from here.
