Jinx

Ongoing | Mingwa | 2019 released

//Preliminary Jaekyung is just so emotionally stunted. I’m interested in seeing just how he’s going to progress from that to being more mature and honest with himself. That he has these bouts of [harsh] tenderness between his aggressive behavior that lures Kim Dan into a false sense of security— at times he even convinces himself he should be grateful to Jaekyung— before ultimately using that kindness against him to coerce him into sex, makes him that much more intimidating. It’s like Team Black said, they’re lucky a guy like him found a relatively healthy outlet for all that aggression. By the time Jaekyungs feelings for Kim Dan begin to manifest, he’s already grown accustomed to the thought of Kim Dan as something he owns. He’s just so repressed and emotionally stunted that those feelings have morphed into a desire to possess and control him entirely. He’s so obsessed with control that when he finally has Kim Dan at his feet begging to be fucked, he starts taunting him with the promise of release. My little sadist. Id be fine if he didn’t even get a redemption arc seeing as I can’t help but look at Jaekyung as being an example of how emotional repression shapes manipulative and abusive tendencies. He could just keep falling back into his vices and hurting Kim Dan, those small slivers of kindness coming back in waves to keep him attached. But I know he will so I’m kind of looking forward to it. This is like GriffGuts if Guts was a frail and helpless twink.

Nineteen Over

Complete | cheongdam | 2019 released

Who do they have translating this man, there’s no way this is the official release. If you can look past the poor translation quality, Nineteen Over is… surprisingly cute, with smooth pacing and seamless transitions into its flashback sequences. I would’ve preferred more time spent on Henry’s sadistic treatment of Noah when he was young but that’s a personal nitpick. Despite his attempts to come off as mean and domineering, I enjoyed that Henry was likened to a child throwing a tantrum. He has this deep rooted obsession with Noah that manifests as a need to control him, and seeing Noah endure pain in his stead solidified the idea that Noah belonged to him in his mind. He forces himself on Noah, which itself is an act that exercises extreme control and objectification over another, but can’t even properly veil his childish motives— “Why did you leave me?” “I told you not to leave me”— ultimately he’s upset that the illusion of Noah being his property was broken, and Noah could see right through him. You can really sense that they’re equally obsessed with each other and it’s so cute how Henry reverts to his more vulnerable, childish self and allows himself to be scolded by Noah.

Very annoyingly on the nose and I can't take any of the later dialogue seriously. It would be nice if some attention was given to Ookami so I could figure out what his deal is. Why is he so subservient.

The Gospel

Complete | FUSA Juuji | 2000 released

It’s just so wish-washy and bulldozes through its plot. I really like that Hagiwara discovers his masochism through Takagi’s obsession with him and it was an interesting twist that he wasn’t actually in love with Takagi and just liked the rough sex. But I’m not so easily convinced of Takagi’s transformation from a hardened gangster who doesn’t know how to be tender into this love-sick simp of a Yakuza. I don’t understand why the Goto subplot with the rival gang was necessary, especially since his death didn’t spark tension between their gangs like you might expect, considering they occupied the same territories. In fact, the gang-warring in general is secondary to Hagiwara and Takagi’s relationship. And maybe the whole point was to get Hagiwara to realize it wasn’t just the sex he liked about Takagi, but this is not a turning point since Hagiwara’s attitude towards Takagi still doesn’t change until the end of the last chapter, as the resolution to a completely unrelated plot point. I really liked Hagiwara’s brief relationship with Yasushi— he recognized his former, scared self within the 5th Boss and sought to corrupt him in a way similar to himself. Yasushi eventually grows into his position, opting to find a comfortable place within this new world if he cannot escape it, and is even willing to kill Takagi for Hagiwara due to his grown attachment to him This all makes me so irrationally angry with its direction, because it’s finally acknowledged that Hagiwara enjoys the thrill of being wanted yet unattainable— which is why he still wants Takagi in spite of not loving him— and yet in the final stretch he succumbs to his apparently dormant feelings for Takagi. And I just think it would’ve been so much more interesting for Takagi’s feelings to remain unreturned, while Hagiwara continues using Takagi and Yasushi’s feelings for him to his advantage.
