It's so depressing, yet deeply rooted in the MC knowing himself and the things he has been through as a cop and the trauma that has come with it. One of the reasons I think he works so well with the ML over the 2ML is because the ML is making him face the music of how his on-the-clock self as an officer is starting to unalign with his off-the-clock self, and it comes from the traumatic experiences forced upon him that have made it more clear. This also can explain in more detail the reason behind his pull to Beck, not only as a criminal but as a person who makes him feel more honest and open around him, which is why he said, "crush me." He's definitely leaning towards self-destruction and choosing to plunge further into darkness and helplessness, but in his eyes, he's doing it with someone who sees and validates him, which after years of trauma and mental health neglect might be what he needs. I do like the 2ML, and I do believe he can help him and allow him to change for the better. However, I also think there's a reason for the setup and push between these two, and I'm 100% for seeing how things go between them and if it can help the MC.
