The way courting dynamics are approached here between herbivores and carnivores is a great foil to straight women trying to have romantic relationships with men. Women are constantly (consciously or not) negotiating their own safety with men. So much time has to be spent building the basic trust that they won't abuse their immense power and hurt the women just because they can. This story observes the dynamic from both angles, carnivores, and herbivores. The wolf is overwhelmed by how much pain he could inflict upon his loved one. He is particularly riddled with the guilt of knowing that he wouldn't even be punished if he did rape someone. People would just sweep it under the rug and absolve him of any fault, saying he couldn't control himself he is just an animal. He understands that he needs to hold himself accountable for his behavior. The rabbit is painfully aware that anyone could attack him at any time. He understandably has a hard time trusting carnivores with his safety. It's hard to focus on romantic feelings when your physical integrity is constantly at risk. By the end of the story, he concludes that the wolf has self-control and can be trusted at least for now. It is widely acknowledged that in compromises like this, herbivores will always be at a loss.
